Tinubu Pins 2027 Hopes On South East As APC Adopts President As Consensus Candidate

In Nigeria’s evolving political chessboard, endorsements are no longer mere rituals, they are signals of shifting alliances and future calculations.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South East has formally adopted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its consensus candidate for the 2027 presidential election, a move that underscores the region’s growing stake in national power politics.

At a South East APC Stakeholders’ Meeting held at the Presidential Hotel in Enugu, Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodimma declared that President Tinubu had entrusted his political future to the zone, describing the decision as both historic and collective.

Uzodimma stated that the South East’s support for the President extends beyond partisan interests, framing it as an investment in the region’s long-term relevance within Nigeria’s political landscape.

According to him, supporting Tinubu to complete a second term would help lay the foundation for the South East’s eventual bid for the presidency.

He cited improving economic indicators, including relative foreign exchange stability, fuel price adjustments and easing food prices, as justification for continuity, stressing that ongoing reforms require time to mature.

Calling for grassroots mobilisation, the governor urged party leaders to demonstrate the South East’s renewed political strength through decisive electoral outcomes, adding that the APC now has “a new home” in the region.

The meeting climaxed with a unanimous voice vote adopting President Tinubu as the zone’s consensus candidate.

The motion was moved by former Senate President, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, and seconded by another former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani.

The gathering attracted a broad array of APC leaders, including Governors Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi) and Peter Mbah (Enugu), Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, lawmakers, party executives and other key stakeholders across the South East.

The adoption marks a bold political statement by the South East APC, reinforcing claims that the party is consolidating its presence and influence in the region ahead of 2027.
