Naval Chief Takes War Against Terror To Lake Chad, Pushes Stronger Joint Operations

As the battle against insurgency in Nigeria’s North East enters a critical phase, military leaders are intensifying coordination to consolidate recent gains and secure lasting peace.

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has called for enhanced joint operations among the Armed Forces during a strategic visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, in Maiduguri, Borno State.

During the visit, Vice Admiral Abbas praised troops for their bravery, resilience and sacrifices, while conveying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appreciation for the successes recorded in curbing terrorist activities.

He urged the personnel to sustain the momentum to fully degrade remaining threats.

The Naval Chief stressed that inter-service collaboration remains vital to operational efficiency, rapid response and national security.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to maintaining a strong presence on the Lake Chad waterways, describing maritime dominance as crucial to peace, stability and economic recovery in the region.

According to him, sustained naval operations have contributed to the reopening of key waterways, allowing fishermen, farmers and traders to resume their livelihoods, thereby boosting local economies and restoring normalcy.

Welcoming the Naval Chief, the Theatre Commander, Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, commended the Nigerian Navy for its critical role in securing the Lake Chad Islands, noting that effective control of the waterways has been central to recent operational successes.

Vice Admiral Abbas also assessed naval facilities along the Monguno Road, visited the Naval Base Lake Chad Command in Baga, interacted with troops at Fish Dam and conducted a riverine patrol of the Lake Chad waterways.

The visit concluded with a New Year luncheon with personnel.

In a separate engagement, the Naval Chief paid a courtesy visit to Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, who applauded the Navy’s achievements and called for sustained operations to maintain peace and support socio-economic growth.
