Nigeria Reaffirms Support For Somalia’s Unity, Warns Against Fragmentation
Nigeria has reiterated its firm commitment to the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political unity of Somalia, stressing that any move to undermine the country’s statehood poses a threat to regional stability in Africa.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the Federal Government declared its unequivocal support for the Federal Republic of Somalia, describing the Somali government as the legitimate authority representing the will of its people.
Nigeria also commended Somalia’s ongoing efforts to pursue peace, security and national reconciliation despite persistent challenges.
The statement signed by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, underscored Nigeria’s alignment with the principles of the United Nations Charter and the African Union’s Constitutive Act, noting that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity remains the bedrock of international relations.
It warned against actions or rhetoric that could weaken Somalia’s constitutional order, calling on regional and international actors to support Somali institutions in rebuilding a stable and resilient nation.
Nigeria further emphasised that Somalia’s stability is critical to peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the wider continent.
As such, it pledged continued support through multilateral engagements and international cooperation.
The government also cautioned the international community against recognising any part of Somalia as an independent entity, warning that such actions would only escalate tensions and deepen the crisis.
