Nursing Vocation: Onitsha Graduates Urged To Serve With Compassion, Excellence

Beyond certificates and ceremonies, nursing remains a calling rooted in humanity, and this was the central message as new nurses graduated in Onitsha.

The Metropolitan Archbishop of the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, His Grace, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke, has charged graduating students of the College of Nursing Sciences, St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital, Onitsha, to practise their profession with compassion, love and a strong sense of ethical responsibility.

Archbishop Okeke gave the charge at the institution’s second convocation ceremony, describing nursing as a noble vocation that demands selflessness, professionalism and deep commitment to caring for the vulnerable.

He cautioned the graduates against actions capable of jeopardising their professional licences, urging them to allow Christian values to guide their practice.

“You are now professional nurses grounded in faith. Let love and compassion define your service, and put into practice all that you have learnt,” he advised.

The ceremony, preceded by a Holy Eucharist, attracted clergy, government officials, parents, nursing professionals and other distinguished guests.

In her address, the Provost, Mrs Theresa Aniedu Obi-Odunukwu, described the convocation as a celebration of perseverance and academic excellence, highlighting the college’s impressive performances in internal and Nursing and Midwifery Council examinations.

She appealed for greater support through partnerships, scholarships and infrastructural development.

Three sets of students, 2020, 2021 and 2022, graduated, with Ubosi Miracle Uchechukwu, Okolo Ogechukwu and Amadi Lucy Uchechi emerging as the best graduating students for their respective years.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates, marking the formal entry of the graduates into the nursing profession.
