New Evidence Warns: Alcohol Harm Rising As Industry Expands Into Vulnerable Regions
A growing body of global evidence is painting a grim picture that alcohol is taking more lives, harming more families, and reaching more young people than ever, yet the tools to curb this crisis are already well-known and within reach.
Vital Strategies, in partnership with Economics for Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, has released the second edition of “Trouble Brewing: The Case for Alcohol Policy,” a timely report that cuts through industry narratives to highlight the true scale of alcohol’s impact.
According to the report, alcohol remains a leading cause of disease, injury and early death worldwide, with most alcohol-related fatalities occurring among people aged 20 to 39.
The harms extend far beyond individual drinkers, affecting children, families and entire communities.
The report warns that the alcohol industry is rapidly expanding into regions with fewer safeguards and is aggressively using digital marketing to target youth.
Women, who face heightened health risks from alcohol, are increasingly in the crosshairs of these campaigns.
Yet the solutions are neither new nor unclear.
The report underscores that the most cost-effective interventions sit within the WHO SAFER package, particularly higher alcohol taxes, strict marketing restrictions and tighter controls on availability.
Several countries are already demonstrating how evidence-based alcohol policies can reduce harm, but the authors insist that coordinated, urgent action is needed to keep pace with industry expansion and changing consumption patterns.
As “Trouble Brewing” makes clear, governments have proven tools at their disposal, what is needed now is the political will to use them.
