Factory Inferno In Nnewi Raises Fresh Questions On Industrial Safety

In a town where factories rarely sleep, it was the silence that first signalled danger.

Before dawn broke on Wednesday, a mysterious blaze swept through a factory in Nnewichi, Nnewi North, destroying goods worth millions of naira and leaving residents wondering how quickly fortunes can turn to ashes.

The fire, which started around 5:30 a.m., tore through stacks of tissue paper, baby clothing, and diapers, materials that burn fast and fierce. Witnesses said the flames moved “like a beast let loose”, feeding on the dry stockpile as smoke curled into the early morning sky.

One resident, Obinna Okoye, recalled how the neighbourhood was still deep in sleep when the first crackles erupted.

“Most of us didn’t even know something was happening until the heat woke a few people,” he said, describing the panic that spread as residents rushed outside in confusion.

But the real tension came from uncertainty, how far would the fire spread before help arrived?

Within minutes, firefighters battled their way into the compound, racing against time to stop the inferno from consuming the entire facility and neighbouring structures. Their arrival, according to witnesses, was the turning point.

The Fire Service Commander in charge of the Nnewi zone, F. Jerry, later confirmed that the blaze had been fully contained.

He said an investigation has begun to determine what sparked the early-morning disaster.

For now, the factory stands as a dark, charred reminder of how quickly a quiet dawn can turn into a race against time, returning the town to the same uneasy question it woke up with:

What really happened just before sunrise?
