RATTAWU President Urges Broadcasters To Defend Nigeria’s Story At IBAN AGM 2025
At a time when Nigeria’s media landscape is grappling with economic strain and rapid digital shifts, the President of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU), Comrade Prince Emeka Kalu, has called on broadcasters to remain steadfast as custodians of the nation’s narrative.
Delivering a goodwill message at the 2025 Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria (IBAN), Comrade Kalu commended broadcasters for “standing tall amidst harsh economic realities” and sustaining quality programming for millions of households.
He stressed that the responsibility of shaping Nigeria’s image must not be outsourced, noting that “the story of Nigeria must be told by Nigerians, boldly, responsibly, and unapologetically rooted in our realities.”
Kalu encouraged broadcasters to align with government efforts in safeguarding an authentic national narrative that reflects the country’s diversity and evolving identity.
The RATTAWU President also lauded the African Independent Television (AIT) for allowing its staff to unionise under RATTAWU, declaring: “AIT already has RATTAWU, and we are still awaiting others.”
He maintained that strengthening workers’ voices boosts the industry’s overall capacity, promotes national cohesion, and drives digital transformation.
He reaffirmed RATTAWU’s commitment to continued collaboration with IBAN and other broadcast stakeholders to build a more ethical, inclusive, and progressive media sector, adding that only through unity can Nigeria’s story be told better and stronger.
