Nigeria Records Slight Drop In Lassa Fever Cases As NCDC Releases Week 45 Situation Report

As the dry season approaches, typically a period of heightened risk for Lassa fever transmission, the latest figures from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) offer a mixed picture: a slight decline in weekly infections, but a continued rise in cumulative fatalities compared with last year.

According to the NCDC’s Week 45 Lassa Fever Situation Report (3-9 November 2025), confirmed cases fell from 12 in the previous week to 10 cases, all recorded in Ondo and Edo states.

So far in 2025, Nigeria has logged 976 confirmed cases and 178 deaths, with a case fatality rate of 18.2%, higher than the 16.4% recorded during the same period in 2024.

The report shows that 21 states across 102 local government areas have recorded at least one confirmed case, with Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, and Taraba accounting for 87% of all infections.

The most affected age group remains 21–30 years, and one new healthcare worker was infected during the reporting week.

Despite the year-on-year increase in deaths, both suspected and confirmed cases show a downward trend compared to the same period last year.

The NCDC urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, adopt preventive measures, and seek early medical care when symptoms arise.
