Anambra’s Battle Against Cultism Gains Momentum As Repentant Youths Seek Forgiveness
In a rare show of remorse and a sign that the fight against cult-related violence is yielding results, nine young men in Anambra State have publicly renounced their involvement in various cult groups, pledging to embrace peace and reform.
The group, accompanied by their parents, visited the Agụnechemba Security Outfit headquarters in Awka to seek forgiveness and formally abandon their past lifestyles.
Their action follows a recent directive by Prince Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Policing, who ordered intensified operations against cultism statewide.
According to a statement by Agụnechemba’s Media Publicity Secretary, Comrade Nweke Nweke, the repentant youths expressed deep regret for the consequences of their actions.
Speaking anonymously on behalf of the group, one of them admitted that cultism had brought “shame and unforeseen consequences,” adding that they had resolved never to “return to Egypt”—a symbolic commitment to a new life.
Reacting, the Majority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Ikenna Ofodeme, praised their courage and urged others still involved in cult activities to follow suit. He noted that cultism remains a major source of violent crimes such as kidnapping, extortion, and community attacks.
Hon. Ofodeme, who chairs the Committee on Internal Security, directed Agụnechemba to document the details of the repentant youths and forward them to the State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, for monitoring and rehabilitation.
Describing the development as encouraging, Agụnechemba Security Outfit appealed to residents to continue providing useful intelligence to help sustain ongoing efforts to keep communities safe.
