US Lawmakers Push For Sanctions Over Alleged Religious Freedom Violations In Nigeria

In a move that could redefine diplomatic pressure on Nigeria’s internal affairs, the United States House of Representatives has called on the Departments of State and Treasury to impose targeted sanctions on individuals and organisations accused of undermining religious freedom in the country.

Among those named are the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, both cited in connection with alleged human rights abuses and religious persecution.

The lawmakers urged the US government to hold accountable any group or individual found complicit in acts that threaten religious coexistence, insisting that freedom of belief remains a core American foreign policy principle.

If implemented, the sanctions could include asset freezes, travel bans, and other punitive measures designed to pressure offenders and promote accountability in Nigeria’s handling of religious tensions.
