Fresh Violence In Benue As Suspected Herders Kill Seven In Two-Day Attack

The wave of insecurity in Nigeria’s Middle Belt has again reared its head, as seven persons were reportedly killed in a sustained two-day attack by suspected herders on Anwuel village in Oglewu district, Ohimini Local Government Area of Benue State.

Residents say the attackers invaded the community in what appeared to be a coordinated onslaught, leaving several houses razed and many families displaced.

The victims, mostly local farmers, were said to have been caught unawares as the assailants struck repeatedly between Tuesday and Wednesday.

A local source described the attack as “merciless and unprovoked,” calling for urgent intervention by security agencies to prevent further bloodshed.

Authorities in Benue have yet to issue an official statement, but locals fear renewed clashes could spread to nearby communities if decisive measures are not taken.

Benue State, often regarded as Nigeria’s “food basket,” has in recent years become a flashpoint of violent conflicts between herders and farming communities, with repeated calls for lasting peace and justice still largely unmet.
