NRFF Boosts Girl-Child Rugby Development As Coaches Complete T1 Training In Abuja

As the sun set over Abuja, the atmosphere at the closing ceremony of the Rugby Rising Play–T1 Coaches Training Course was charged with renewed energy and purpose.

The event, which drew coaches from across Nigeria, marked another milestone in the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation’s (NRFF) mission to grow the game, especially among young girls.

Reaffirming the Federation’s commitment to continuous development, NRFF President, Dr Ademola Are, described the training as “a key step in expanding grassroots rugby and promoting gender inclusion in sports.”

He commended World Rugby for its sustained support, noting that this second edition of the T1 programme has empowered more coaches with the tools to spread rugby’s values of teamwork, discipline, and respect.

“The participation of eleven female coaches is particularly encouraging,” Dr Are said. “It will create a ripple effect that strengthens girl-child involvement in rugby across Nigeria.”

Rugby Rising Play Supervisor, Wuraola Hussaini, lauded the enthusiasm of the participants and challenged them to translate their new skills into action.

“This is just the first phase,” she stressed. “Each coach must return to their state and introduce at least 300 children, especially girls, to the game. I’ll be monitoring their progress and providing continued guidance.”

At the event’s conclusion, participants received Rugby Rising Play kits to support their grassroots training sessions, a move that reinforces NRFF’s drive for practical empowerment and technical sustainability.

The Rugby Rising Play initiative continues to stand as a beacon for gender inclusion and youth engagement, nurturing a new generation of female rugby talents ready to represent Nigeria on both continental and global stages.
