ECOWAS, OECD Seal Pact To Drive Sustainable Growth In West Africa

In a decisive step towards deepening regional cooperation and fostering sustainable development, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at accelerating inclusive, resilient, and evidence-based growth across West Africa.

The agreement, sealed on 20 October 2025 in Paris, was signed by Dr Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, and Mr Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the OECD.

It sets out a comprehensive framework for collaboration in key policy areas including regional economic integration, trade and investment facilitation, good governance, food security, and human capital development, with a strong focus on empowering women and youth.

According to both institutions, the partnership aligns closely with ECOWAS Vision 2050 and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, reaffirming their shared commitment to regional stability, prosperity, and sustainability.

Dr Touray noted that the partnership represents a renewed commitment to translating research and policy into tangible impact for citizens, while Cormann described the agreement as a step forward in promoting economic transformation through collaboration and innovation.

The MoU signals a new era of strategic cooperation between Africa’s leading regional bloc and one of the world’s foremost economic organisations, a partnership poised to shape the future of sustainable development in West Africa.
