Nigeria’s Civil Rights Movement Mourns Veteran Activist, Biodun Aremu
Nigeria’s civil society community has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran activist and movement builder, Comrade Biodun Aremu, fondly known as Aremson, whose life was defined by unwavering commitment to justice, democracy, and people’s power.
In a statement on Monday, the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) described Aremu’s passing as “a loss not only to his family and comrades but to every movement that believes in a fair and accountable society.”
Aremu, who served as Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF), was celebrated for his role in uniting workers, students, and communities under a common front for social justice.
His leadership, CAPPA noted, “provided coordination and clarity that kept the voices of resistance strong.”
> “He lived and breathed struggle,” CAPPA wrote. “Even in failing health, he continued to mentor younger activists, attend meetings, and remind us that people are never powerless once they realise their strength in unity.”
Beyond his national impact, Aremu’s activism extended to international solidarity movements, linking Nigeria’s fight for liberation with global struggles against oppression.
He was also a staunch supporter of CAPPA’s campaigns for corporate accountability, public service protection, and water rights, standing firmly with the Our Water Our Right Africa Coalition (OWORAC) in the fight against water privatisation across Africa.
CAPPA’s statement reflected deep admiration for his lifelong convictions, that public goods must remain public and that democracy must serve the people, not profit.
“We honour his memory not only with words but through continued action,” CAPPA stated. “We will keep fighting for the same ideals that defined his life — a world where no one’s dignity is for sale.”
As Nigeria’s activist community reflects on his passing, Comrade Biodun Aremu’s life remains a rallying point for a new generation of organisers, a reminder that the power of collective struggle can outlive even the most tireless of warriors.
