Information Minister Applauds NBTE For Boosting Creative Media Skills

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has hailed the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for its commitment to advancing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), particularly through the newly inaugurated Creative Media Sector Skills Council.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by NBTE Executive Secretary, Professor Idris Bugaje, and members of the Council, the Minister described the initiative as a major step towards bridging the skills gap in one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing sectors.

“The creative media sector is brimming with talent but often lacks structured pathways for recognising skills, obtaining certification, and aligning with industry standards,” Idris noted.

He added that the Council would empower practitioners, improve media output, and strengthen efforts against misinformation while projecting Nigeria positively.

The Minister assured NBTE of his Ministry’s full support, stressing that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises skills and technology development.

He also highlighted the government’s wider commitment to youth empowerment, citing the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) which has already supported more than 500,000 students.

Prof. Bugaje, in his remarks, underscored the importance of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) scheme, designed to certify informally trained media professionals such as apprentices, granting them nationally recognised qualifications.

With over 70 per cent private sector participation, the Creative Media Sector Skills Council aims to drive training that meets global standards and ensures Nigeria’s media workforce remains competitive both at home and abroad.
