Nigeria Welcomes Senegal’s New Foreign Minister, Eyes Stronger ECOWAS Ties

Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has congratulated Cheikh Niang on his appointment as Senegal’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, describing it as a development that bodes well for West African diplomacy.

Niang, a seasoned diplomat who until now was Senegal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has also served as Ambassador to Japan, the United States, South Africa, and Consul General in New York.

His extensive global experience, Tuggar noted, positions him to play a pivotal role in shaping Senegal’s foreign policy at a time when ECOWAS faces critical tests of unity and relevance.

Tuggar expressed optimism that Niang’s leadership would further strengthen the “historic, strong, and vibrant” ties between Nigeria and Senegal, while also reinforcing collective efforts to promote stability, economic growth, and democracy across West Africa.

Observers believe his appointment could inject fresh momentum into regional cooperation, as both Nigeria and Senegal remain central players in ECOWAS.
