Rights Group Petitions IGP Over Alleged Police Bias, BEDC Misconduct In Asaba
The Young Nigerian Rights Organisation (YNRO) has filed a criminal petition against the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of ‘A’ Division, Asaba, and officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), accusing them of trespass, theft, intimidation, and abuse of office.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Victor Ojei, the group alleged that BEDC staff unlawfully entered his compound in May 2025 to disconnect power despite no outstanding bills, and later returned in August to disconnect the supply and allegedly cart away electric wires.
According to the petition, the DPO showed bias in handling the matter, focusing on a video showing Ojei holding a gardening cutlass, his regular tool, while ignoring BEDC’s alleged violations of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) regulations.
YNRO is demanding the immediate removal of the DPO, prosecution of BEDC officials involved, recovery of the alleged stolen wires, restoration of power supply, and compensation for damages.
The group further warned against what it described as the misuse of police officers by private companies to criminalise civil disputes.
The petition has been forwarded to the Inspector-General of Police, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, and the NERC, with a call for urgent action to restore public trust and protect citizens’ rights.
