IGP Strengthens Ties With UN To Tackle Illicit Arms In Nigeria
From rural flashpoints to bustling cities, the flow of illicit small arms remains one of Nigeria’s most persistent security threats, fuelling violence, emboldening criminal networks, and undermining peace efforts.
Recognising the urgent need for stronger action, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Thursday hosted a high-level delegation from the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC) and the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) at Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Led by Dr. Adedeji Ebo, with UNREC Director Anselme Yabouri, staff member Grub Nolwenn, AIG Thomas Nebhon, and Lt. Col. O.N. Okon, the team engaged in strategic talks aimed at enhancing inter-agency collaboration to curb the flow of illegal weapons across the country.
Commending the Nigeria Police Force for its ongoing efforts, the UN delegation highlighted the importance of coordinated intelligence, effective tracking systems, and robust disarmament programmes in reducing arms proliferation.
Egbetokun reaffirmed the Force’s determination to intensify the mopping up of illegal arms, revealing that thousands have already been recovered.
He pledged to sustain strong partnerships both local and international to dismantle criminal networks and safeguard national security.
