One-Term Promises? Anambra Info Commissioner Calls Bluff On Political Gimmick

As the Anambra 2025 governorship race gathers steam, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, has raised the alarm over what he calls the “inherent subterfuge” in candidates pledging to serve only one term in office.

In a thought-provoking piece titled “Inherent Subterfuge In Taking One-Term Promise Seriously,” Dr Mefor argues that such promises are often unrealistic and politically dangerous, warning that power dynamics and regional interests rarely allow a willing leader to walk away after just four years.

Citing national examples like former President Goodluck Jonathan, he notes that even leaders with good intentions often get cornered by geopolitical pressures and loyalists unwilling to let go.

“Power is addictive,” Mefor writes. “Supporters who laboured to bring a candidate to power won’t easily buy into a short-term agenda that cuts them off midway.”

He added that projects, policies, and true governance take time to mature, and a one-term promise could risk derailing Anambra’s stability and well-established zoning system.

With some candidates from Anambra South promising to serve just one term if elected after incumbent Governor Soludo, Mefor cautioned against what he called “a political charade,” urging voters to remain vigilant and stick with proven democratic processes.
