CDS Reaffirms Military-Media Collaboration To Tackle Disinformation

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has restated the Armed Forces’ commitment to working closely with the media in combating the growing threat of disinformation and misinformation.

Represented by Rear Admiral A.M. Haruna, the CDS made the remarks at the inaugural Diplomatic and Security International Conference, hosted by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN) in Abuja.

General Musa noted that in today’s era of hybrid warfare, false information doesn’t just mislead—it poses a real national security risk.

“Disinformation is not just a media problem—it is a national security threat. It can erode public trust, destabilise communities, and empower criminal elements,” he warned.

He stressed the need for a united front, urging journalists and media houses to partner with the military to ensure accurate and responsible reporting, particularly from conflict zones and areas grappling with transborder crimes.

The conference, themed “Diplomacy, Security, and the Media in a Changing World Order”, attracted diplomats, security experts, academics, and journalists who explored pressing global security issues from cyber warfare to the role of diplomacy in conflict resolution.

A key takeaway from the event was the collective call for regular dialogue between the media and security agencies, joint training sessions, and the formation of a national fact-checking task force to curb coordinated disinformation.

General Musa was also among those honoured at the event, receiving an award for his outstanding efforts in strengthening military-media relations.
