Tinubu Committed To Media Freedom – Minister Idris

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a firm believer in media freedom and recognises the vital role journalism plays in shaping Nigeria’s democracy, according to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Blueprint Newspaper Lecture, Impact Series and Awards in Abuja, Idris described the President as “an ardent supporter of the media” who has never interfered with the minister’s professional judgement.

“President Tinubu understands that the media is crucial to nation-building. He has consistently encouraged me to carry out my duties professionally, without interference,” the Minister said.

Idris stressed the importance of responsible journalism, urging media practitioners to balance their watchdog role with a commitment to national unity.

“You have an enormous responsibility to hold leaders to account, but also to ensure your reporting doesn’t destabilise society. Discernment is key,” he noted.

The Minister also addressed his past role at Blueprint Newspaper, clarifying that he stepped down as Chairman upon joining the Federal Executive Council, though he remains proud of the paper’s growth.

Dignitaries at the event included SGF Senator George Akume, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and traditional ruler Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar.
