Ogun Governor Abiodun Intervenes Swiftly As Tunisian Athletes Survive Road Accident In Abeokuta
A major tragedy was narrowly averted on Saturday, 19th July 2025, after a vehicle carrying members of the Tunisian delegation to the ongoing CAA U18/U20 African Athletics Championships in Abeokuta was involved in a road traffic accident.
The unfortunate incident occurred while the athletes were returning to the Games Village from the competition venue.
According to the National Sports Commission (NSC), the vehicle was not part of the official convoy and was travelling without the standard security and support escort usually provided for participating teams.
In what many have described as a stroke of luck, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, was on the same route when the accident happened and immediately sprang into action.
He personally rendered first aid support at the scene and ensured the injured athletes were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta for emergency care before being transferred to a better-equipped facility.
The Director General of the NSC and Governor Abiodun later visited the athletes at the hospital, where they have continued to monitor their recovery closely.
The DG is also in constant communication with the Tunisian delegation’s leadership.
In a statement signed by Kola Daniel, Special Adviser on Media to the NSC DG, the Commission expressed deep concern over the incident and wished the injured athletes a speedy and full recovery.
“Our thoughts are with the athletes, their teammates, and families. Their safety remains our top priority,” the NSC stated.
The Commission also commended the Ogun State Government, emergency medical teams, and security operatives for their prompt and coordinated response.
The CAA Championships continue in Abeokuta, but the incident has served as a sharp reminder of the importance of strict adherence to movement protocols for visiting teams.
