Nigeria Charts New Path To Tackle HIV As NACA Convenes 7th National Council On AIDS In Lagos

In a significant push towards a sustainable HIV response, the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) is set to host the 7th National Council on AIDS (NCA) meeting this August in Lagos.

Held under the theme “Advancing National HIV Sustainability Agenda in the Changing Global Policy on Aid”, the high-level gathering aims to unite government leaders, civil society groups, donor agencies, and development partners in shaping a resilient and homegrown strategy for Nigeria’s HIV response.

This year’s council, supported by the Lagos State Agency for the Control of AIDS, comes at a critical time when global aid is shifting, calling for stronger local ownership and innovative multi-sectoral approaches.

NACA’s Director-General, Dr Temitope Ilori, who also chairs the Council, stressed the urgency of the moment:

“As donor landscapes evolve, Nigeria must take bold steps to ensure that HIV prevention, treatment, and support remain accessible and resilient. The Council offers us a unified platform to chart that future.”

Among the key highlights are technical sessions focusing on sustainable funding, strengthening state-level health structures, and reviewing progress made since the 6th council meeting.

Delegates from all 36 states and the FCT, including Commissioners for Health, State AIDS Control Agencies, NACA officials, CSOs, and patient advocates, will be in attendance.

Participants are also encouraged to submit memoranda that could shape future policy directions.

The three-day event will conclude with a gala night hosted by the Lagos State Governor, honouring outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s HIV fight.

With broad participation from TB, malaria, reproductive health, and faith-based stakeholders, the 7th NCA promises to be a turning point in Nigeria’s quest to end the HIV epidemic.
