FG Rallies Nigerians Behind Gas Safety As Economy Transitions To Cleaner Energy

The Federal Government of Nigeria, has restated its commitment to educating Nigerians on the safe use of gas as the country steadily transitions to a natural gas-powered economy.

At the 2025 Gas Safety Conference in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, applauded organisers — Fleissen Events and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) — for their foresight in hosting the event under the theme: “Transitioning to a Natural Gas-Powered Economy: Safety as a Shared Responsibility.”

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Ogbodo Chinasa Nnam, the Minister emphasised that safety isn’t just about technical regulations but also about public knowledge, behaviour, and trust.

“Safety is not the sole responsibility of regulators or industry operators; it is a shared mandate involving government, media, civil society, traditional institutions, and every Nigerian citizen,” he said.

He also pledged the Ministry’s continued support for culturally sensitive public education campaigns to drive safer gas use across households, industries, and transport systems.

Chairman of the Conference, Osten Olorunsola, alongside key stakeholders, endorsed the National Gas Safety Declaration, urging Nigerians to take gas safety seriously in light of the country’s abundant gas reserve

The high-level gathering drew representatives from the Ministries of Petroleum Resources, NMDPRA, NEMA, FRSC, Police, SON, and other industry stakeholders.

Discussions continue on improving safety protocols, regulatory frameworks, and innovations in Nigeria’s evolving gas landscape.
