Nigeria Reacts As U.S. Slashes Visa Validity for Citizens

The Federal Government of Nigeria has raised concerns over a new visa policy by the United States, which now limits non-immigrant visas for Nigerians — including B1/B2 (business and tourism), F (students), and J (exchange programmes) — to just three months with a single entry.

Describing the move as troubling, Nigeria says the decision undermines the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation that has long defined the relationship between both countries.

In a statement signed by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the government stressed that the policy places an unfair burden on Nigerians, from students chasing academic dreams to professionals, families, and cultural ambassadors engaged in legitimate travel.

“This new restriction doesn’t just limit travel; it disrupts lives and opportunities,” the Ministry stated. “It runs contrary to the principles of reciprocity and equity expected between friendly nations.”

While Nigeria recognises the U.S. government’s sovereign right to shape its immigration policies, it is urging Washington to reconsider the decision in the interest of long-standing ties and shared global responsibilities.

Diplomatic talks are currently ongoing, with the Ministry affirming its commitment to securing a fair and balanced resolution that serves the interests of both nations.
