U.S. Revises Visa Policy For Nigerian Travellers

In a significant update to its visa rules, the United States Department of State has revised its reciprocal non-immigrant visa policy, with immediate effect, impacting several countries, including Nigeria.

Under the new directive, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerian citizens will now be single-entry visas, valid for three months only.

However, any U.S. non-immigrant visas issued before 8 July 2025 will remain valid and unchanged.

This change is part of the U.S. government’s ongoing global visa reciprocity review, a standard process aimed at aligning visa policies with technical, security, and diplomatic benchmarks.

Visa terms, such as the number of permitted entries and length of stay, are subject to periodic review and may be altered as needed.

The U.S. authorities in a press release in Abuja, stressed that the visa issuance process is built on criteria designed to maintain the integrity of their immigration system. These include:

Secure Travel Documentation ensuring applicants possess verifiable, tamper-proof identity documents.

Visa Overstay Control measures to reduce the likelihood of overstaying visa terms.

Information Sharing cooperation on criminal records and security information to enhance public safety.

The United States says it continues to work closely with the Nigerian government to help meet these benchmarks.

Commending the ongoing reforms by Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies, the U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to a strong bilateral relationship grounded in mutual respect and shared security and economic interests.

Nigerian travellers are advised to ensure their travel documents are valid and up to date, and to comply strictly with visa conditions.

The U.S. also reiterated its dedication to fostering educational, cultural, and business exchanges with Nigeria.

As both nations work towards strengthening ties, the U.S. expressed optimism for continued collaboration at all levels to ensure safe, secure, and lawful travel between Nigeria and the United States.
