ECOWAS, Benin Launch Annual Review Mechanism For Regional Projects

In a move to strengthen regional cooperation and accountability, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Government of Benin have jointly established a mechanism for the annual review of ECOWAS-funded projects and programmes in the country.

The consultation meeting, held in Grand-Popo, brought together key stakeholders including ECOWAS Parliamentarians from Benin, representatives from sectoral ministries, regional agencies, and NGOs.

Over two days, participants assessed more than 50 ongoing and completed projects, addressing challenges in coordination, monitoring, and visibility.

Recommendations included appointing ministry-level focal points, creating a national ECOWAS project directory, and adopting a communication strategy.

Inspired by the UEMOA model, the proposed framework aims to align regional initiatives with Benin’s national priorities.

ECOWAS Resident Representative in Benin, Ambassador Amadou Diongue, emphasised the importance of this model for improving governance and ownership.

If successful, the approach could serve as a template for other member states, reinforcing ECOWAS’s broader vision of regional integration and sustainable development.
