The Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has made a clarion call to African youths to become torchbearers of peaceful and credible elections across the continent.

Speaking at the Civil Service University in The Gambia on Tuesday, April 15, Prof. Yakubu, who addressed students of International Affairs and Peace Studies, stressed that youth participation is critical to the success of electoral processes. “Young people form the backbone of election duty staff,” he said, adding that their involvement spans voter registration, logistics, and even election monitoring.

The INEC Chairman while urging them to shun electoral malpractices and misinformation, cautioned against spreading fake news and urged the youth to embrace digital responsibility. “Don’t be among the fake news merchants… report elections truthfully and responsibly,” he warned.

According to the INEC boss, Africa’s democracy depends on its young people. “Do the right thing. Obey the laws. That’s how we make every vote count,” he said, encouraging them to nurture and protect democracy with sincerity and patriotism.
