The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, has called for urgent action to protect the rights of the girl child and address the rising economic challenges facing Nigerians.

The resolutions were part of the communiqué issued at the end of its monthly congress held on March 15th, 2025, at the NUJ FCT Secretariat, Utako, Abuja.

The congress, chaired by the Chairperson Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, spotlighted key concerns, including rising cases of gender-based violence, urging for swifter action against perpetrators and stronger advocacy for girls’ rights.

Members also expressed deep concern over the high cost of living despite recent government economic reforms, and condemned the hike in electricity and internet tariffs, which they said are worsening the plight of citizens.

NAWOJ further demanded stricter regulations on the rampant sale of sachet alcoholic drinks, citing societal dangers, and called on authorities to introduce rent control policies to ease the housing burden on journalists.

The congress also geared up for the 2025 International Women’s Day celebration themed “Amplifying the Voices of Rural Women” and concluded by celebrating members born in March while reaffirming their commitment to press freedom and women’s rights.
