A disturbing display of power and impunity by a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, representing Aba North and South, Alex Ikwechegh, has sparked public outrage, after a viral video captured him verbally and physically assaulting a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, on October 27, 2024.

The incident reportedly began when Mr. Abuwatseya politely requested Mr. Ikwechegh to come outside to receive a package. This “offense” led to a heated confrontation, where Mr. Ikwechegh slapped the driver, refused to pay, and boasted about his untouchable status, falsely claiming to be a “Senator.”

Following the encounter, Mr. Ikwechegh allegedly used his influence to have Mr. Abuwatseya arrested and his car impounded. The video, now widely shared on social media, has stirred strong reactions, leading to the lawmaker’s arrest by the Nigerian Police. While Mr. Ikwechegh has since issued an apology, Civil Society Organisations argue that the apology lacks genuine remorse and fails to address the wider issue of political impunity in Nigeria.

A statement signed by over 60 Civil Society Groups, including Global Rights, Amnesty International Nigeria, the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education, among others called for Mr. Ikwechegh’s prosecution and immediate suspension from the House.

They demanded that he be held accountable without special treatment, stressing that his behavior is a stark reminder of the urgent need for justice reforms in Nigeria.

The group also requested protection for Mr. Abuwatseya against further intimidation, buttressing the broader struggles of ordinary Nigerians who often face systemic abuse from those in power.
