We Have Right To Revoke Accreditation Of Any Observer That Violates Code Of Conduct For Election Observation – INEC Warns

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has warned that it reserves the right to revoke the accreditation of any individual observer or observer group that violates the Code of Conduct for election observation.

The Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu who gave the warning at the third quarterly Consultative Meeting with Civil Society Organisations, reminded the organisations of their obligation as observers to comply with the objectives of election observation and the Code of Conduct contained in the Commission’s rules of engagement for accredited election observers.

He also announced that the Commission will soon announce the dates for the bye-elections into the vacancies in four States, involving three State Constituencies and one Federal Constituency and the two vacancies declared by the Speaker of the House of Representatives following the death of the members representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency of Oyo State and the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State.

Professor Mahmood also spoke of plans for the upcoming Edo State Governorship election which is in 52 days.

Speaking on behalf of the CSOs, Dr. Gabriel Nwambu, of the Centre for Credible Elections, promised that they will intensify their advocacy for peaceful elections, including engagement with stakeholders.
