Hon. Charumbira Re-elected President, Pan-African Parliament

The former President of the Pan African Parliament, PAP, Hon. Chief Fortune Charumbira, Zimbabwe, has been re-elected as President of the Pan-African Parliament, PAP, during a bye-election to fill vacant positions within the Office.

He polled 127 votes out of the 177 votes after running as the sole candidate from the Southern African Region at the bye-election held during the Extraordinary Session of the Sixth Parliament in South Africa.

Hon. Chief Charumbira had previously held the position between June 2022 and August 2023 before the post became vacant when he left to participate in the General Elections in Zimbabwe to renew his term of office as Senator

Addressing members of the Continental Parliament following his re-election, Hon. Chief Charumbira promised to continue with his mission to “Revive, Renew, Reposition, and Reinvigorate the Pan-African Parliament.”

He called on members of parliament to conduct themselves in a manner that will build public confidence and extend a hand of fellowship to the media.

Hon. Chief Charumbira, pledged to look into the funding needs of the parliament to enable it function effectively while appealing to member states to ratify the Malabo protocol.

Hon. Prof. Massouda Mohamed Laghdaf, Mauritania, was also re-elected as the First Vice President of the Pan African Parliament, Hon. Dr. Ashebir Woldegiorgis Gayo, Ethiopia, 2nd Vice President, Hon. Lucia Dos Passos, Cabo Verde, 3rd Vice President, while Hon. Djidda Mamar Mahamat, Chad, was elected as the Fourth Vice President of the Pan African Parliament in the same election.
