Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States, otherwise known as The Community Parliament has reiterated its stance on diplomacy as solution to the Niger impasse.

The parliament’s ad-hoc committee on Niger stalemate had at a consultative parley with the president of ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray at the body’s secretariat in Abuja, stood its grounds that diplomacy remains the best option.

Speaking with the Parliament’s press crew after the meeting, a member of the Nigerian Delegation to ECOWAS Parliament, Ali Ndume, revealed that the position of the parliament on how to handle the Niger republic stalemate remained unchanged.

Senator Ndume explained that there’s no alternative to diplomatic solution, saying that their stand was informed by the grave implications of a military intervention in Niger.

The meeting is one of ECOWAS diplomatic approaches to finding amicable solution to the Niger dilemma.

The Parliament had on August 12, held a virtual meeting on the situation in Niger republic, where most of its members opted for diplomatic solution as against the decision of the Authority of Heads of State, who had since settled for the use of force, to which an ECOWAS standby force has been activated.
