Kano Irrigation Projects: Arewa Group Backs Tinubu’s Re-election

For farmers in Kano State, improved access to irrigation could mean more land under cultivation, better harvests and more reliable livelihoods.

The Arewa Revival Project says ongoing federal interventions at three major dams would help deliver these benefits, as it declares support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.

The group commended the Federal Government’s rehabilitation and expansion projects at Tiga, Challawa Gorge and Kafin Chiri dams, describing them as strategic investments in food security, rural development and climate resilience.

In a statement signed by its Project Coordinator, Hon. Muttaka Ahmed Ibrahim, the group said the projects were expected to expand irrigated farmland, improve water management and create economic opportunities for farming communities.

According to the statement, the intervention at Tiga Dam is designed to open about 875 hectares for irrigation, while projects at Challawa Gorge and Kafin Chiri dams are expected to cover 240 hectares and 164.91 hectares respectively.

The group said improved irrigation infrastructure could support year-round farming, increase agricultural production and strengthen food supply chains across Kano State and the wider northern region.

It, however, stressed that the benefits would depend on timely completion, effective maintenance, transparent implementation and the involvement of beneficiary communities.

The Arewa Revival Project linked the interventions to the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying continuity in leadership would provide an opportunity to consolidate ongoing development projects.

It also called for a broader approach to ecological restoration that balances environmental conservation with farmers’ livelihoods and the long-term welfare of communities.

The group urged government agencies and local stakeholders to ensure the projects translate into lasting benefits for the people of Kano State.
