INEC Weighs Mock Presidential Poll, Full Tech Audit To Restore Confidence Ahead Of 2027

ABUJA – Seeking to strengthen public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is considering a full audit of its election technology and a mock presidential election ahead of the 2027 general election.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the proposal while receiving the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

According to Amupitan, the measures are aimed at addressing concerns that emerged from the 2023 general election, particularly regarding the reliability of electoral technology. He said the Commission is exploring ways to conduct the exercises despite the fact that they were not included in its budget.

The proposed audit will complement ongoing efforts to strengthen the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) and the Commission’s cyber-security architecture through penetration testing, system redundancy and disaster recovery mechanisms.

Amupitan reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to delivering transparent and credible elections, noting that public confidence depends largely on the integrity of the Commission’s technology and processes.

The British High Commissioner pledged continued UK support for Nigeria’s electoral reforms, expressing confidence that cooperation between both countries would continue as preparations for the 2027 general election gather pace.
