IGP Moves To Tighten Security Ahead Of Osun Governorship Election
A firm security posture ahead of a major election is often the first test of public confidence, and Nigeria’s police leadership says it is taking no chances in Osun State.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has ordered an immediate intensification of security operations in Osun State as part of efforts to tackle rising violence and ensure a peaceful governorship election on 15 August 2026.
During a strategic security meeting in Osogbo with the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone XI, Fasuba Akinyele Olabode, and other senior officers, the IGP expressed concern over recent killings, cult-related violence and other criminal activities in the state.
He directed the Zone XI leadership and the Osun State Commissioner of Police to deploy proactive policing strategies, strengthen security operations and restore public confidence ahead of the poll, stressing the need for a peaceful, credible and violence-free electoral process.
The meeting was attended by senior police officers, including AIG Femi Haruna, Commissioners of Police Ibrahim Gotan (Osun) and Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga (Oyo), as well as the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu.
Responding, AIG Fasuba assured the Inspector-General that Zone XI and the Osun State Command would fully implement the directives and put in place robust security measures to combat criminality and safeguard lives before, during and after the election.
