Extends Voter Registration By Two Weeks, Launches Online Self-Service For First-Time Voters
A move to widen voter participation and modernise Nigeria’s electoral process has seen the electoral umpire extend the ongoing voter registration exercise while introducing a fully online registration option for first-time voters.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks, giving eligible Nigerians until 24 July 2026 to register ahead of future elections.
The Commission said the extension followed a review of the exercise and feedback from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
The CVR, which began on 18 August 2025, was initially scheduled to end on 10 July 2026.
INEC also announced the introduction of a self-service online registration platform for first-time voters.
The service will go live on 8 July 2026 through its dedicated CVR portal, allowing eligible citizens to complete their voter registration, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting an INEC office.
According to the Commission, the system is equipped with identity verification, biometric validation and integrity checks to safeguard the credibility of the National Register of Voters.
INEC urged all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register to take advantage of the extension and the new technology-driven registration option, reaffirming its commitment to a credible, inclusive and accessible electoral process.
