Police Warn Against Electoral Offences, Vow To Prosecute Vote Buyers and Election Disruptors
As Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen its democratic institutions, the Nigeria Police Force has issued a stern warning against electoral offences, declaring that any attempt to undermine the integrity of elections will be met with the full force of the law.
The Force cautioned political actors, voters and other stakeholders against engaging in vote buying, vote selling, ballot box snatching, voter intimidation, election-related violence and other unlawful acts capable of disrupting the electoral process.
According to the police, such offences threaten the credibility of elections, erode public confidence in democratic institutions and compromise the will of the electorate.
The warning comes amid growing concerns over electoral malpractice, which has remained a major challenge to free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria.
Security experts have consistently identified vote trading and election violence as key factors that weaken democratic governance and discourage citizen participation.
The Nigeria Police Force emphasised that officers deployed for election duties have been directed to remain vigilant and act professionally to safeguard voters, electoral officials, and election materials.
The Force further warned that individuals or groups found violating electoral laws would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law, stressing that no one would be above accountability.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to ensure peaceful, transparent and credible elections across the country, urging citizens to uphold democratic values and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
