Democracy Day: EU Applauds Nigeria’s Democratic Progress, Reaffirms Support For Inclusive Governance
Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule has drawn praise from the European Union, which says the country’s democracy continues to grow through resilience, reforms and the active participation of its citizens
As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the European Union (EU) has congratulated the country on its democratic journey, describing democracy as a continuous process that thrives on citizen participation, accountability, peaceful dialogue and strong institutions.
In a Democracy Day message, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, noted that Nigeria’s democracy has evolved through the determination of its people, communities demanding accountability, women expanding leadership opportunities, and citizens increasingly engaging in civic activities.
The ambassador said the EU remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s democratic development through its EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programme.
According to him, the initiative strengthens democratic institutions, promotes inclusive participation and supports electoral processes across the country.
He highlighted the EU’s collaboration with Nigeria’s electoral authorities, the National Peace Committee and stakeholders in the justice sector to deepen democratic practices, encourage peaceful participation and strengthen the rule of law.
The EU is also supporting greater inclusion for women, young people and persons with disabilities, while backing independent media and fact-checking networks to enhance public trust and democratic discourse.
Mignot further stated that through the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy, the bloc would continue investing in partnerships that expand opportunities, strengthen participation and build resilience for future generations.
He stressed that democracy must be continually protected, strengthened and renewed.
