Nigeria is setting its sights on a record-breaking outing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with the National Sports Commission (NSC) unveiling an ambitious target of 20 gold medals for Team Nigeria.

The target, announced by NSC Director General Bukola Olopade in Abuja, would mark the country’s most successful performance in Commonwealth Games history if achieved.

Speaking after a strategic meeting with federation presidents, technical directors and secretaries, Olopade said the Commission was determined to push beyond existing projections and challenge athletes to deliver exceptional results.

According to him, a scientific assessment conducted by the Elite Athletes Development and Podium Board projects Nigeria could win about 16 gold and 20 silver medals. However, the NSC believes the country can surpass those figures.

“We must challenge ourselves and get the federations to work harder for us to achieve 20 gold medals,” Olopade said, adding that such a feat could place Nigeria among the top five nations at the Games.

Nigeria’s best-ever Commonwealth Games performance came at Birmingham 2022, where Team Nigeria secured 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze medals, surpassing the previous record of 11 gold medals set at the 1994 Games in Victoria, Canada.

With preparations gathering momentum under the leadership of NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Olopade, Team Nigeria will be aiming not only to break its own record in Glasgow but also to cement its status as one of the Commonwealth’s leading sporting nations.
