Primary Elections: Aide Defends Principal, Condemns Media Campaign Ahead Of Appeal Process
As post-primary tensions continue to ripple through the political landscape, the special adviser to the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, on Media and Information Strategy, Abimbola Tooki, has pushed back against what he described as a coordinated campaign of misinformation aimed at discrediting his principal following the recently concluded party primaries.
In a statement made available to journalists, Abimbola, argued that while winners and losers naturally emerge from every democratic contest, it is unacceptable for aggrieved aspirants and their supporters to resort to falsehoods, blackmail and media propaganda simply because the outcome did not align with their political ambitions.
The statement emphasised that the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) had already established a transparent and credible appeal mechanism to address complaints arising from the primaries.
According to the media aide, all petitions are expected to be reviewed fairly and on their merits before final decisions are taken.
He further noted that the party’s guidelines clearly stipulate that while results are collated at various levels, the formal declaration of winners is subject to the completion of the appeal process.
This, he said, was designed to guarantee fairness, transparency and the constitutional right of dissatisfied aspirants to seek redress.
The aide accused some individuals of attempting to undermine the party’s internal democratic structures by launching media attacks rather than pursuing legitimate channels for grievance resolution.
He maintained that the ongoing criticism of his principal was driven by personal interests rather than any genuine concern for democracy or party unity.
Reaffirming confidence in the appeal committees and the NWC, the statement called on party members and the public not to be swayed by what he described as distorted narratives, stressing the need to uphold truth, justice, internal democracy and party cohesion.
