Faulty Transformer At Apo Substation Disrupts Power Supply, TCN Directs AEDC To Alternative Feeders
Fresh concerns over power stability in the Federal Capital Territory emerged on Friday after the Transmission Company of Nigeria confirmed a technical fault involving one of its major transformers at the Apo Transmission Substation in Abuja.
According to the company, one of the 100MVA 132/33kV transformers at the Apo Substation tripped at about 12:56 a.m. on May 22, 2026, following a differential relay indication while operating on no load.
In a statement issued by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, TCN disclosed that preliminary inspection revealed oil spillage around the transformer, prompting further technical investigations by maintenance engineers.
The investigation later identified faults in the red and yellow phase 33kV bushings of the affected transformer.
TCN explained that while the red phase bushing has been successfully restored, repair works are still ongoing on the yellow phase to fully stabilise the equipment.
As a temporary measure to minimise disruption, the company said it had requested the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company to reroute electricity supply for customers connected to the affected 33kV feeders through alternative TCN feeders within AEDC’s franchise network.
The development may affect electricity supply to some parts of Abuja serviced from the affected Apo feeders until repairs are completed.
TCN assured customers that its engineers are working intensively to restore the transformer and normalise power supply as quickly as possible.
The company also apologised to AEDC and affected electricity consumers for the inconvenience caused by the incident.
