Beautiful Beginning Academy Clinches NUJ-FCT 2026 Media Literacy Quiz Title
In a growing effort to revive press clubs and strengthen media literacy among young Nigerians, students in the Federal Capital Territory showcased impressive knowledge of journalism and current affairs during the 2026 Secondary School Media Literacy Quiz organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council.
At the end of the keenly contested competition held in Abuja, Beautiful Beginning Academy emerged champions after defeating Cedar Hall Academy, Lugbe, 8-6 in a dramatic tie-breaker following a 205-point draw at the end of the second round.
Beautiful Beginning Academy had earlier taken the lead in the first round with 115 points, ahead of Cedar Hall Academy’s 95 points, while Government Senior Secondary School, Garki, scored 70 points and GSS Gwarimpa secured 80 points.
In the second round, Cedar Hall Academy scored 110 points, Beautiful Beginning Academy recorded 90 points, GSS Gwarimpa scored 80 points, while GSS Garki finished with 40 points.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the NUJ-FCT Council, Grace Ike, said the competition was organised to mentor young people on media operations and encourage the revival of press clubs in secondary schools.
She praised the students for their outstanding performances and urged teachers to sustain press club activities through regular educational engagements.
“Teachers, please organise your press clubs and, once in a while, host events and invite the NUJ-FCT Council; we will come,” she said.
According to her, the initiative would further promote media literacy, mentorship, critical thinking, and community engagement among students across the FCT.
Also speaking, the Vice Chairman of the NUJ and Coordinator of Press Clubs, Yahaya Ndambabo, described the programme as part of the council’s commitment to promoting responsible communication, journalism, and intellectual development among young people.
He noted that press clubs help students develop confidence, leadership skills, communication abilities, and an interest in public affairs.
Representatives of the Secondary Education Board, teachers, and other stakeholders attended the event, while participating students described the competition as a unique and welcome initiative.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards and cash prizes to the winning schools by the NUJ-FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike.
