Grid Under Pressure: NISO Moves To Tackle Power Sector Irregularities In Lagos Corridor

Amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s fragile electricity network, the Nigerian Independent System Operator, has launched a major intervention to curb operational irregularities threatening grid stability on the Ikorodu-Sagamu 132kV transmission corridor.

Speaking at a high-level stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, NISO Managing Director, Abdu Bello Mohammed, warned that offtake indiscipline, metering discrepancies and energy accountability gaps along the corridor pose serious risks to the integrity of the national grid.

The meeting brought together key players in the power sector, including the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, distribution companies, generation companies and eligible customers.

Mohammed described the engagement as a “decisive intervention” aimed at restoring operational discipline, strengthening compliance and protecting confidence in Nigeria’s electricity market.

He stressed that violations of market and grid rules could destabilise the entire power system, insisting that all stakeholders must embrace transparency, accountability and strict adherence to regulations.

According to him, the meeting is expected to produce enforceable corrective measures, clear compliance timelines and stronger monitoring mechanisms to safeguard the reliability of electricity supply nationwide.
