As anxiety around public examinations fuels desperate tactics, security agencies are tightening the noose on fraudsters exploiting candidates.

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command under the IGP’s Safe School Initiative have arrested a man, Eric Nwombu, for allegedly impersonating a coordinator of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and unlawfully possessing examination materials in Atani.

The suspect was apprehended on 14 April 2026 after reportedly collecting JAMB examination slips from unsuspecting candidates who had visited a cyber café to check their exam centres.

Police sources say Nwombu claimed to be a JAMB coordinator for the 2026 exercise, but his explanation raised suspicion among staff at the centre, who promptly alerted security operatives.

He allegedly attempted to flee on sighting the police but was swiftly arrested.

Items recovered from him include eight JAMB examination slips and a notebook containing names and examination numbers of candidates, materials that he could not satisfactorily explain.

Authorities have commenced preliminary investigations, with the case set to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for further inquiry.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to protect the integrity of public examinations, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
