With voter trust and national cohesion increasingly shaped by information, and misinformation, the push for value-driven civic engagement is gaining renewed urgency ahead of Nigeria’s next general elections.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting national values and civic education, calling for deeper collaboration with the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) to strengthen democratic participation.

Director-General of NOA, Lanre Issa-Onilu, made the call during a courtesy visit by NAWOJ, describing the engagement as both timely and strategic.

He noted that effective nation-building depends on sustained partnerships between institutions tasked with public communication and citizen engagement, highlighting NOA’s extensive grassroots presence across over 800 offices nationwide.

Issa-Onilu emphasised the importance of targeting young Nigerians with voter education, warning that digital influences and foreign content are reshaping values, sometimes in a negative manner.

He disclosed that the agency is advancing the Nigerian Identity Project under the National Values Charter, alongside plans to reintroduce Citizenship Studies in schools and promote indigenous children’s content.

Responding, NAWOJ National President, Aishatu Ibrahim, said the partnership would focus on combating misinformation and boosting civic awareness through joint training, community outreach, and multilingual education campaigns aimed at women and youth.

Both organisations agreed that strengthening civic responsibility and ethical media engagemencruciale critical to ensuring inclusive, informed participation aentersheads into another electoral cycle.
