EU Earmarks €290m To Strengthen Nigeria’s Efforts In Digital, Health and Agriculture

In a world where strategic partnerships are increasingly shaped by economic diplomacy, Nigeria has secured a significant boost as the European Union expands its investment footprint in Africa’s largest economy.

The European Union has announced a fresh €290 million investment package for Nigeria, targeting key sectors including digitalisation, healthcare, agriculture and migration management.

The announcement was made in Abuja during the Eighth EU-Nigeria Ministerial Dialogue, co-chaired by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

The new funding, part of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, is expected to drive infrastructure development, job creation and long-term economic growth, while aligning with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope agenda.

A significant portion, €131 million, will be invested in digital transformation, including the rollout of 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic cables to expand internet access to millions of underserved Nigerians.

The initiative will also support digital skills development under Nigeria’s 3 million Technical Talent programme.

In the health sector, €55 million has been earmarked to boost local production of medicines and vaccines, with financing support for Nigerian companies through the Bank of Industry and technical training for the workforce.

Agriculture will receive €86 million to strengthen cocoa and dairy value chains, improve access to finance for farmers and promote climate-smart practices, as Nigeria targets increased milk production and export growth.

Additionally, €16 million will go towards migration management, focusing on reintegrating returning migrants and combating human trafficking networks.

EU officials say the investments are designed to create sustainable jobs, improve livelihoods and open up new opportunities for both Nigeria and Europe.

With these new commitments, total EU support to Nigeria since 2025 now stands at €962.5 million, reinforcing a deepening bilateral relationship built on economic cooperation and shared development goals.
