Disinformation Wars: DICAN To Convene Global Summit In Abuja To Tackle Rising Threat To Investment and Security

In an era where false narratives can shake economies faster than bullets, the battle for truth has become a critical front in global security and economic stability.

Against this backdrop, the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN) has announced plans to host its second Diplomatic, Security, Trade, and Investment International Conference on 20 May 2026 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja.

The high-level summit will focus on Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI), a growing form of hybrid warfare capable of distorting public perception, weakening institutions, and discouraging foreign investment.

Speaking ahead of the event, DICAN Chairman, Idehai Frederick, underscored the urgency of addressing disinformation, noting that a secure information space is fundamental to economic growth.

“A secure information environment is essential for strong trade and investment. Misinformation can scare away foreign investors and destabilise local markets,” he said.

The conference is expected to attract diplomats, intelligence experts, media professionals, and business leaders from across the globe, to strengthen cross-sector collaboration in tackling the spread of false information.

Participants will explore strategies for setting international standards to counter state-sponsored disinformation, enhancing detection of hybrid threats, and promoting accurate, responsible reporting to protect national and economic interests.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, who is the Grand Patron of DICAN, will deliver the keynote address.

Other notable speakers include the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, alongside top security experts, regulators, and private sector stakeholders.

The summit builds on the success of DICAN’s inaugural conference held in July 2025, which attracted over 60 diplomatic missions, civil society organisations, and academic institutions.

With the stakes higher than ever, DICAN says the 2026 conference will serve as a strategic platform to confront the weaponisation of disinformation and reinforce Nigeria’s position as a secure and attractive destination for global investment.
