IWD 2026: NUJ Urges Government To Prioritise Women’s Inclusion In Leadership and Governance
As the world marks International Women’s Day, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on governments across Nigeria to prioritise policies that ensure women are fully included in leadership and decision-making at all levels.
In a statement issued by its National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, the union said the commemoration provides an important opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while addressing persistent barriers to gender equality.
The NUJ noted that although women play a vital role in national development, their representation in political, economic and social leadership positions remains significantly below expectations.
According to Yahaya, sustainable development and democratic governance cannot be achieved without the active participation of women.
He stressed that ensuring equal opportunities for women in education, employment, political participation and leadership within the media would strengthen national development and promote social justice.
The union also urged both public and private institutions to create safe and supportive work environments where women journalists and professionals can thrive without discrimination, harassment or inequality.
In addition, the NUJ encouraged the media to continue amplifying women’s voices, celebrating their achievements and advocating policies that advance gender equality across the country.
Reaffirming its commitment to gender balance within the journalism profession, the union called on policymakers, civil society groups and development partners to work collectively to ensure women are fully included in governance and national development.
