Nigeria Police Deepens Counter-Terror Fight With New Tactical Training and CTU Bases

As Nigeria continues to confront evolving security threats, the Nigeria Police Force is expanding its counter-terrorism architecture with new tactical training and the establishment of additional operational bases across the country.

The Force has strengthened the operational readiness of its Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) through a specialised two-week training programme conducted in partnership with the British High Commission in Nigeria via the Office of the Counter Terrorism Regional Coordinator for West Africa.

The Close Quarter Battle and Intelligence Analysis training brought together 56 CTU officers, exposing them to modern counter-terrorism tactics, intelligence analysis, and coordinated operational strategies designed to tackle terrorism, banditry, and other serious crimes.

Speaking at the closing ceremony at the Peacekeeping Conference Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja, Lieutenant Colonel Ian Tyler of the British High Commission commended the officers for their professionalism and urged them to apply the newly acquired skills effectively in the field.

He also reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to continued collaboration with Nigeria in strengthening counter-terrorism operations in the region.

Representing the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Counter Terrorism Unit, AIG Akoh Gabriel, said the training reflects the current police leadership’s resolve to continually upgrade the capacity of officers to respond to emerging security threats.

Beyond training, the Police leadership has also approved the establishment of three new Counter Terrorism Bases in Madagali, Adamawa State; Ikot Odo in Akpabuyo, Cross River State; and Ode-Remo in Ogun State.

Additional CTU personnel have also been deployed to strategic locations nationwide to improve rapid response and operational coverage.

The Nigeria Police Force says the move forms part of a broader strategy to reinforce national security through improved partnerships, enhanced operational capability, and proactive deployment against terrorism and other threats.
